Sunday: The Tour Begins

We met with our tour guide in the breakfast room of the hotel about 3:00 p.m.  Everyone had to provide proof of vaccination and a negative home Covid test.  After a little introduction we headed out to explore.  Our guide, Colleen,  pointed out that the road a block from the hotel led to the Monument to Italian Unification in one direction and to a huge church in the other.  She led us off to tour some fountains and piazzas on the way to dinner, including Piazza Navona and Trevi Fountain.

We stopped at and toured the Pantheon and learned how rose petals had been dropped through the hole in the roof that morning to celebrate Pentecost.  After dinner we passed St. Ignatius Church which Colleen said was not usually open, but it was that night so we got to see it.

While we enjoyed the food at dinner, neither one of us remembers what was served.  One thing we both noted throughout the trip was that for all we heard about how much the Italians eat vegetables, we did not get many at the tour meals.  Dinner was a great time to start to get to know our fellow tour members. Our group included one extended family with teen/young adult kids, two late middle age female teachers who were friends, a thirty-something couple from NYC, an eighty-something couple, a couple with a college-age daughter and her friend, and a sixtyish couple.

So glad we got to see St. Ignatius

By the time our walk was done we were beat but ready to see more of the fabulous city!
